Best things to do in New Orleans
French Quarter
New Orleans is a city like none other in the United States. The architecture, the food, the music, the art, the nightlife, the list goes on. New Orleans is famous for its French Quarter and Bourbon Street and there is definitely plenty to see and do there.
Bourbon Street
Bourbon Street is fairly tame most of the year during the daytime but can really come alive at night. I don’t recommend staying right on Bourbon Street if you want to get some sleep. We stayed at Holiday Inn Chateau LeMoyne and had no complaints.
Cafe Du Monde
For a treat, you must visit Cafe Du Monde for beignets and coffee. It can be a bit messy, but it’s definitely worth it!
Bike tour
We enjoy going on bike tours to see new cities, so we joined the Free Wheelin’ Creole Bike Tour to get a better feel for New Orleans. The tour covered about eight miles by bike and took us to the Marigny, Esplanade, St. Louis Cemetery, City Park, Treme and Congo Square.
Garden District
New Orleans also has a beautiful Garden District full of charming old homes. We went on the Two Chicks Garden District walking tour to see the area.
World War II Museum
The National World War II Museum is in New Orleans and is touted as the city’s No. 1 attraction. It is a must-see for any history buff.
Jazz
For nighttime entertainment, check out Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop Bar, said to be the oldest structure used as a bar in the United States, or head to Frenchmen Street to hear some legendary jazz music.
Mardi Gras
I have never been in New Orleans during Mardi Gras, but we did check out this Mardi Gras exhibit at the Louisiana State Museum to see some of the colorful memorabilia and learn about its history.
Jackson Square
I always like to walk across the street from Jackson Square to get a view of the Mississippi River at least once when I visit New Orleans. I’d like to go on a riverboat next time I’m there. What’s your favorite thing to do in New Orleans?
