Best things to do in Chicago
Chicago River Architecture Tour
The first time we visited Chicago was in the summer and we were treated to beautiful weather for most of our stay. We took advantage with a Chicago River Architecture Tour. You get great views of the city and also learn some of Chicago’s history. There are quite a few unique buildings that you pass by. Even if you don’t take a boat tour, the Chicago Riverwalk is lovely to walk along and there are lots of places to grab a bite to eat.
Wrigley Field
We timed our visit to be able to see our Texas Rangers play the the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. We also went on a tour of the historic stadium, which has been home to the Cubs since 1914.
Even though the Rangers didn’t win, we enjoyed our time in the friendly confines. You can’t miss Wrigley Field if you are a sports fan!
Deep dish pizza
Another must-do when in Chicago is indulging in deep dish pizza. We have tried Giordano’s, Lou Malnati’s and Gino’s East. They’re all yummy, but Lou Malnati’s is our favorite. If you’re not too stuffed, pick up the Garrett Mix from Garrett Popcorn. The cheddar and caramel popcorn mix might sound a bit odd at first, but it is addictive.
The Bean
No trip to Chicago would be complete without a stop at Millennium Park to get a photo of the famous reflective Bean statue. You can’t miss it with all the people!
360 Chicago
For great views of Chicago and Lake Michigan, head to 360 Chicago, the John Hancock Observatory. You can see for miles from the 94th floor. Day or night, it is worth the trip up.
Skydeck Chicago
For more amazing views and to see how brave you are, check out Skydeck Chicago at Willis Tower. You can step out on The Ledge, a glass balcony that extends four feet from the 103rd floor. I’ll admit that I was a little scared to try it!
Shows to see
Chicago also offers great entertainment options. We’ve been to The Second City twice and they put on hilarious improv comedy shows. Many stars have gotten their starts there. Also check out what shows Broadway in Chicago is putting on. We’ve seen “Hamilton” and “The Book of Mormon” in Chicago and both were fantastic!
Navy Pier
Navy Pier offers shopping, dining and entertainment on Lake Michigan. You can take cruises and tours out onto the lake from there. Throughout the summer, they put on free fireworks shows over the lake and we were able to enjoy one.
Crime Tour
We also went on the Chicago Crime Tour and learned about Al Capone, John Dillinger, The Untouchables and more as we visited landmarks around the city. Dillinger was shot at the Biograph Theater.
Museum of Science + Industry
The Museum of Science + Industry has the only German submarine in the United States on display. You can tour the U-505 among many other exhibits at the museum. Chicago has something for everyone. What’s your favorite thing to do in the Windy City?
