Exploring Balboa Park in San Diego
Balboa Park is a must-do on any San Diego itinerary. Home to many museums, performing arts venues, gardens, trails and food vendors, there is something for everyone.
The land for Balboa Park, which is next to downtown, was set aside in 1868. There are museums on everything from air & space to art to science to history to Comic-Con.
I visited Balboa Park in March when the cherry blossoms were in bloom at the Japanese Friendship Garden.
The entire garden was lovely, but I especially loved the wisteria and cherry blossoms. After touring the garden, I had lunch at the Tea Pavilion.
I also enjoyed all of the architecture and palm trees around Balboa Park. The 1915 Panama-California Exposition brought Spanish Colonial Revival architecture to Balboa Park and Southern California.
The Desert Garden is a bit off the beaten path but worth a visit. It’s 2.5 acres full of interesting cacti, including this orange one that reminded me of coral.
I have heard that the Botanical Building is also worth a visit, but it was under renovation during my visit.
Whatever you choose to do at Balboa Park, you are sure to enjoy it. Even if it’s just sitting on a bench, enjoying the scenery and music.
