Exploring the Columbia River Gorge

The Columbia River Gorge is a stunning area along the border of Oregon and Washington. It’s filled with amazing waterfalls, orchards, wineries and views for days.

As you begin your drive in the Columbia River Gorge, stop at the Portland Women’s Forum State Scenic Viewpoint for sweeping views of the gorge, Crown Point and Vista House.

Multnomah Falls is a must-see. At 620 feet, it’s the tallest waterfall in Oregon. Take the trail up to Benson Footbridge for views 105 feet above the lower cascade. For a more serious hike, continue on the trail all the way to the top.

Another beautiful waterfall to stop at is Horsetail Falls, which is 176-feet tall.

There are countless waterfalls in the gorge, but one more I will mention is Latourell Falls, which plunges 224 feet and just takes a short walk to reach.

Next, head up the windy roads to the Rowena Crest Viewpoint for more spectacular views of the Columbia River Gorge. I was there in April and there were tons of beautiful wildflowers in the area, too.

Also in the area is the Hood River Fruit Loop, filled with fruit stands, orchards, wineries, breweries and more along a 35-mile loop in the Hood River Valley.

Finally, check out Mount Hood. There was still plenty of snow on the mountain in April!

Make a stop at the historic Timberline Lodge, a ski lodge dating back to 1937. Timberline Lodge was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1977 and draws nearly two million visitors each year.
