La Jolla kayaking and sea lions

La Jolla

La Jolla is a lovely oceanside town just 20 minutes north of San Diego. It’s a great place to watch the sea lions, go to the beach, take out a kayak or just enjoy the views.

I was there in March and there were tons of sea lions hanging out on the rocks and in the ocean from the Children’s Pool area down to La Jolla Cove.

There’s a nice pathway to walk along the coast and watch them play and relax.

In some areas, there are steps to go down and get closer down on the rocks. Be sure to give the sea lions their space and don’t get too close.

In the afternoon, I went on a kayaking cave tour with La Jolla Kayak. We kayaked from the beach out into the Pacific Ocean. Be prepared to get splashed a lot when you first go out over the waves.

If the weather cooperates, you get to kayak into the sea caves, which is amazing. You might also get lucky and see sea lions, dolphins or other sea life in the La Jolla Ecological Reserve and Underwater Park.

The tour lasted about two hours. Afterward, I grabbed dinner across the street at Dough Momma Pizzeria. Another popular spot is The Taco Stand.
