Telluride winter things to do
Telluride, Colorado, is a breathtaking destination throughout the year. I flew into Montrose and visited Telluride in January. You can stay in the town of Telluride or in Mountain Village, which is where the ski resort is located. Whether you want to ski or not, there are many winter activities to enjoy the beauty of the area.
My first activity was in Norwood at Telluride Horseback Adventures, where we rode horses through the snow with Roudy Roudebush.
Roudy has decades of experience and many stories to tell. He’s quite the character, and the scenery is beautiful.
Another must-do is snowshoeing. We rented snowshoes from the Telluride Nordic Center and hiked along the San Miguel River Trail and Idarado Trail toward a frozen Bridal Veil Falls.
It was around four miles roundtrip and the scenery was just incredible. I couldn’t get over all of the amazing views along the way. The trail is mostly flat, but walking through the snow makes is more challenging.
Our destination was Bridal Veil Falls, the tallest free-falling falls in Colorado, which were frozen in the winter.
Another way to see the most gorgeous scenery is snowmobiling. We took the tour to Alta Ghost Town with Telluride Outfitters.
The tour is suitable for all skill levels and takes you up to the abandoned Alta Ghost Town.
We also made stops at the Observatory and Magic Meadows, where we were allowed to snowmobile down a hill at higher speeds if you wanted.
Telluride and Mountain Village are connected by a free, 13-minute gondola ride. Riding the gondola is an activity in itself with spectacular views of the ski slopes below and town of Telluride ahead. I could have ridden the gondola for hours.
Telluride is very walkable and has a lot of cute shops and restaurants to check out. Don’t miss the historic Sheridan bar.
There’s even a tree made of old skis!
You can also access the San Miguel River Trail right off the main streets in town. Enjoy the peace and quiet of a stroll along the river.
For a day trip, head to Ouray, the “Switzerland of America.” Enjoy walking around the shops in town while surrounded by the San Juan Mountains.
Finally, soak away your worries at Orvis Hot Springs, which is clothing optional. Enjoying the warm water while the snow falls around you is magical.
