Things to do in Connecticut
I have made a few trips to the Hartford, Connecticut, area over the last few years and am always looking for fun side trips to see new things while I am there. Fall is my favorite season, so I was excited to visit Connecticut in September one year.
Lyman Orchards
I wanted to take part in some classic fall fun that might not be available at home in Texas, so I headed to Lyman Orchards in Middlefield. Lyman Orchards have been around since 1741 - that’s almost 280 years! They had a cute pumpkin patch set up for photos and also offer apple picking in their orchards. Check their website to see what else is in season to be picked before you visit.
You can also purchase fresh fruits and treats in the market to enjoy on their patio or later at home. I had a delicious turkey sandwich from their deli and you must try the apple cider and apple cider donuts.
They also offer hayrides around the orchards, which give you a chance to enjoy the beautiful countryside. Also, don’t miss their lovely display of fall flowers.
Historic Wethersfield
Another interesting place to check out is Historic Wethersfield, an authentic New England village that is more than 375 years old. I just love this purple door!
Old Wethersfield is full of historic homes, museums, shops and places to eat. It’s fun just to walk around the town and admire all of the architecture. I enjoyed dinner on the patio at Lucky Lou’s Bar and Grill.
George Washington attended services in this meeting house while in town for the Wethersfield Conference during the Revolutionary War.
Yale
I like seeing different college campuses and Yale is a short drive south of Hartford in New Haven. Yale has a beautiful campus to walk around and check out. I was there too late in the day to take a tour, but I’m sure that would be worth your time.
Yale was founded in 1701 and is the third-oldest institution of higher education in the U.S., so there is lots of old architecture of admire.
New Haven
While you’re in New Haven, visit Wooster Street’s Little Italy for some coal-fired pizza at Frank Pepe. The pizzeria has been serving up pies since 1925.
If you are visiting in the spring, enjoy the beautiful cherry blossoms and head to Wooster Square for the annual Cherry Blossom Festival.
ESPN
ESPN does not offer tours to the public, but if you are near Bristol, it is cool to take a ride by the 123-acre campus and satellite field to see where much of our sports entertainment is produced. In neighboring Plainville, J. Timothy’s Taverne is a popular place to eat. The wings there have been named a top 5 bar food by The Food Network.
